During the 1960's, Vogue described the kaftan as an essential garment for every member of the jet-set and photographed actresses and aristocrats in an array of imported traditional styles and western adaptations. Throughout the 60’s and early 70’s, designers in America and Europe delighted in creating their own versions of this loose and flowing silhouette, alongside the flower power movement, where free thinking hippies returned to the West, wearing a flavour of the East, in a range of ethnic, often embroidered, hand-block printed or tie-dyed versions.
Kaftan or caftan is a Persian word, while the garment style is believed to have originated in Ancient Mesopotamia. The Ottoman sultans from the 14th to the 18th centuries wore lavishly decorated kaftans; they were also given as rewards to important dignitaries and generals. Since then, every culture, every climate, every gender and every period in history has had their version of this quintessential garment, each more inspirational than the next.
A symbol of exoticism and a bohemian lifestyle, over the years “kaftan” has become the number one resort piece to pack in ones suitcase. A dress-up or dress-down essential, often a canvas to decorate with bold and beautiful jewellery.
NoLoGo-Chic have launched three new kaftans all in the softest, sustainable, pure cotton. Embroidery decorates our pretty tie-dye pink kaftan and mini-mirrors sparkle on colourful Super Fern and Passion Flower prints.
